On the day of the egg collection, you are required to arrive at our center at the agreed time.
Today, the aspiration of the follicles is almost only performed by state-of-the art transvaginal ultrasound technique. The transvaginal ultrasound is used to visualize the follicles. An aspiration needle is inserted (by aid of a superimposed guiding-line) vaginally straight into the follicle to aspirate fluid from the follicle containing the egg cell.
Usually, the patient undergoes this procedure in a sleep-like and pain reduced state (sedoanalgesia).
We provide a quiet and comfortable room where you can recover after the egg collection. You may then be able to leave the center after a short time.
On the day of egg retrieval, please stick to the following instructions:
Please come fasting for the procedure of egg retrieval. Fasting means abstaining from food for at least 6 hours prior to follicular puncture, whereas you may drink 1 – 2 glasses / cups of clear fat-free liquid without solid contents up to 2 hours prior to the procedure. You may drink water or tea, but please abstain from milk or alcohol!
In the case of a sedoanalgesia you will be given medication that may, in rare cases, produce slight drowsiness and slowed reactions. On this day, you should thus:
-
in case of sedoanalgesia: bring a person who takes you home
-
avoid participating in road traffic
-
avoid operating heavy machinery and doing work associated with increased injury risk
-
avoid any risk of falls and injuries (e.g. sports)
-
refrain from drinking alcohol
